Wire Fraud in FL Real Estate

Wire fraud (18 U.S.C. Section 1343): using wire communications to defraud. FL RE: cybercriminals hack email, monitor closings, send fake wire instructions. Loss: often catastrophic (entire down payment). Protection: verify instructions by phone (known number), don’t change instructions, encrypted communications, MFA on email, and title company protocols. Penalties: up to 20 years (30 for financial institutions), $10K-$1M fines, restitution, and asset forfeiture. Report: FBI IC3, bank (wire recall), and law enforcement immediately.
